NHIF corruption in Migori sees closure of Staken Nyarombo hospital amid million accrued dues

A proprietor and residents have accused the Migori National Health Insurance Fund of corruption that has seen the closure of Staken Nyarombo at Nyandema village in Nyatike sub-county.

Mary Ngao, the proprietor, blamed NHIF for her woes for refusing to pay her since 2018 amounting to close to a million.

She said NHIF withdrew their services in 2018 and claims that she have tried following up with it’s branch in Migori town to make claims for the time NHIF was giving their services but has not been paid three years down the line.

“NHIF Migori branch is marred with corruption, at one point i was told to bribe my way to get paid, other they claim they have been working on it” she complained.

She said the last straw was Sh391,000 owed to the landlord of the building where the hospital stood.

“I have been requesting if I can be paid. Most of my staffs have gone because there was no money to pay them, ” Ngao said.

NHIF manager in Migori Mark Chepchieng denied the corruption claims saying that the office relied on transparency and they treated every client equally and said that he facility’s matter was with them and they were handling it.

“The case is with us and it is being handled,” Mr. Chepchieng said.

Nancy Achieng, said her four months old child were to seek services at the hospital and they received the shock.

“We hear that the president is busy taking of provision of health to all Kenyans, how will they achieve them when we have corruption marring simple tasks,” Achieng’ said.

She said the nearest hospital is five kilometers and doctors there are on strike.
