Three child defilement cases reported at Migori law courts weekly- Stakeholders

Child welfare stakeholders in Migori county have raised concern over high cases of sexual assaults against child with three cases recorded weekly at Migori law courts.

Migori resident magistrate David Kimei said the number is just reported in one court and could rise if Kehancha and Rongo courts are considered.

“Recently I had to stop court session shortly to inquire what was happening with the society in Migori as the number of cases is piling up in courts. It shows rot,” he said.

Migori county children officer John Odinya warned the number can be higher as most cases are never reported.

“Most children defilement and incest cases reported are by people who are best known by the victims who create a loophole in prosecuting the cases at police and court level as most parents, especially mothers, are compromised to drop the cases,” Odinya said.

The officer said Odinya said Migori county needs to have a child rescue center as the nearest one is at Manga area in Nyamira to serve all South Nyanzan counties.

They were speaking during the launch of Migori county advisory committee of children.

The advisory committee will help reduce child labour in gold mine, tobacco and fishing industry; and also end female genital mutilation in Kuria region.
