A dream by Suna West MP Peter Masara dream to change girl child status among the gold mining areas has bore fruits in the KCSE 2023 resultals.

Masara in his first term as legislator secured two-and-half acres of land in Wiga ward and started St Francis Wiga Girls from scratch.

In the Masara area gold mining there have never been a school which was dedicated solely for girls as education for the gender has never played any key role.

“This is the second attempt at national exams, when we started this idea, dream and effort was seen futile but we are changing this area,” Rosebela Waga the principal said.

She said when the school started they were forced to look in villages to have students enrol, bringing in even those who had given birth at home.

The school had 58 candidates and posted a 5.5 mean score which was a big move as they had targetted a 4.5 mean score.

In the first attempt the school had a 3.63 mean score which was a big milestone.

“Out of the candidates we had 10 were mothers, six gave birth in form four and we had three heavily pregnant candidates,” Waga said.

She said a candidate who was suckling had a special matron to sit her exams and she scored a C minus.

“To get a girl who has graduated in this area was a dream, we want to change that image and tell the society that in gold mining area girl child education can thrive,” she said.

Jude Moroso, the school board chair and Moses Soro the chair of PTA thanked MP Masara for pushing through the establishment of the school

The first student got a B plain, seven had B minus while two had C plus.

“Within this short period our population has jumped to 406 and we started by begging for students,” Moroso said.

The two said they expect more than 200 form one admissions and will soon be a three stream institution.

The three said the school has been nicknamed ‘State House’ and will change the gold mining area.
