Migori plans for perennial floods

Migori county he as launched floods management exercise as a widow has been swept by a swollen river.

The exercise kicked in Migori County in preparation of floods following heavy rains now experienced in the region.

The exercise has been launched by Migori county ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Disaster Management in collaboration with the Kenya Red cross Migori branch which will sensitise residents in flood prone areas.

Tom Misenya, the ministry’s director while launching the project in Oria area, Uriri sub-county said residents said lack of evacuation centre forced them run to their relatives when heavy floods strikes

He said the county will help to improve basic facilities in the already established evacuation centers

“This improvement will help residents in floods hot spots get refuge when their homesteads are engulfed by floods,” he said.

A 41 years old widow is feared dead after swollen river Kuja swept her last evening while washing dishes at Wath Ong’er village in Migori County.

According to Simon Awidhi a Red Cross volunteer Sofia Mutenga mother of five who lives close to river Kuja was swept outside her house while washing the utensils.

James Namtalla, the Nyatike deputy county commissioner urged residents to be alert as they approaching rivers and bridges.

Namtala appealed to those living food prone areas to move to higher grounds to reduce the risks associated with the disaster.
