Migori county residents have been left in shock after a consignment of the contraband sugar was released from Kamagambo police station shortly after a senior police officer was transferred.

Residents expected the sugar to be destroyed and were shocked when it moved from the station after Rongo OCPD Jonathan Kisaka who has been key in impounding them moved.

On June 20, police impounded 9 trucks ferrying 4,720 bags of sugar to Sukari Industries believe it was to be repackaged and sold.

Rongo sub-county commissioner Joseph Satia confirmed that the traders told police that the sugar was headed to Sukari Industries for sale.

A team of government officials from KRA, KEBS and anti-counterfeit unit arrived at the station and took time to verify the content of the trucks and counted the bags.

Nine trailers that were ferrying the consignment and being were detained at the local police station were also released.

It is believed that senior police officers who were assigned duty to ensure escort of the consignment to destination felt offended when law enforcers in Rongo defied order from above to secure release of the consignment.
