For the second time since devolution started Central Kanyamkago ward in Uriri constituency have elected their leader unopposed.

The ward ODM nominations winner on January 14 Alex Akugo will be sworn in as tafter Kevin Oketch who sought to stand as an independent candidate against him on March 22 polls withdrew.

No other party has bothered to field a candidate for the seat which fell vacant following the death of the area MCA Michael Osongo who was also the only MCA in the entire Nyanza and Western Kenya to be elected unopposed.

“Oketch who was an independent candidate but failed to raise 500 signatures required to be in the by-elections slotted for March 22, he only managed 399,” IEBC coordinator Christine Otieno said.

Oketch told a section of the press he will face off with Akugo in August 8 polls.

Akugo won the nomination lauded as free and fair by 1,994 votes followed closing by Ken Nyamita who got 1,935.

Other trailed distantly: Don Oyugi getting 243, Paul Ambayo 84 and former area councilor Godfrey Odera coming last with 72 votes.

Akugo is related to Governor Okoth Obado office administrator Dominic Akugo while Ken is the elder brother of Nyamita in nominations that showed strength between the two senior leaders.
