Nyatike Member of parliament Edick Anyanga has called on men to stick to one wife in bid to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Anyanga said the case of men getting married to more than one wife exposed them to AIDS which is prevalent in Nyatike and other areas around Lake Victoria.

“I urge you as your leader to desist from and let go the primitive culture of marrying more than one wife. My people let us not lie to each other yet this vice has led to the dead of thousands of our kinsmen,” Anyanga said.

The legislator wondered why people were playing a blind eye to HIV/AIDS by practicing wife inheritance and marrying many wives yet the epidemic was wiping out the luo nation.

“I am left wondering why ‘our people’ see death approaching and still have the guts to face it head on. Through what other means do you want to learn apart from seeing your relatives succumbing to AIDS?,” he quipped.

He said it was saddening to see very young children, some of who had not yet started school, being paraded at funeral to mourn their parents who had died over what he termed ignorance.

The Nyatike MP urged men to direct the energy and resources they used in marrying many wives to maintain single families and ensure they took their children to school.

The MP decried that most people in Nyatike despite having copper, gold and also practice fishing still lived in abject poverty propagated by polygamy.

Anyanga also cautioned parents against relying on other church leaders and politicians to take care of their children saying it is the duty of parents to mould children to better lead better lives.

“What do you expect to become of your children if you are never at home because you have many wives in homes apart? The future of your children lies in your hands and nobody else,” Anyanga lamented.
