The World Health Organisation has lauded the respond by Migori county government during the cholera outbreak two months ago.

Over ten people died and close to three hundred hospitalised when the disease broke out in Rongo before spreading across the county and in neighbouring Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya counties.

WHO through its country director Custodia Mandlhate said the success saw the country celebrate this year’s World Health day at Matagaro Primary School in Rongo last Friday.

“Here in Kenya, foodborne outbreaks have been associated with cholera and aflatoxins amongst others. WHO is particularly happy with the efforts put by both county government of Migori and the support received from national government of Kenya to combat recent cholera outbreak,” Mandlhate said in a speech.

The theme of the day was “Food safety: from farm to plate” to raise aware of food handling process to help boost health.

Country director in charge of public health Kepha Ombacho said urged county residents to maintain high hygienic standards and continue “to educate and create awareness in health related issues like hand washing and using latrines.”

Migori Health executive Elijah Odhiambo said Rongo residents never build pit latrines nd prefer to use bushes which caused cholera outbreak.
