Sony Sugar allocates Sh10million for burnt cane

Sugarcane farmers contracted by South Nyanza Sugar Company will benefit from Sh10million allocation for cane burnt accidentally.

The allocation will cover for sugarcane burnt accidentally by unknown arsonist in the
previous seasons.

Sony Managing Director Jane Pamela said the amount will help reduce loss incurred by farmers who are faced with huge loans to repay.

“The amount will cover cane burnt accidentally, most ended up drying in farms because the company did not have a better harvesting plan,” he said.

She said they paid the amount even though burnt cane which was automatically harvested were of very low quality.

“We will not accept burnt canes as stipulated in our regulations as they fetch low tonnage and are of poor quality,” she said.

Kenya Federation of Sugarcane Farmers Secretary General Ezra Okoth said farmers had lobbied for the allocation but challenged them to guard their sugarcane “against arsonist as the federation will not intervene again in future.”.
