Rongo sweepers strike over 6 months’ salary arrears, market chokes in garbage

Uncollected garbage in Migori town on Wednesday, traders and residents have complained on failure of county government to collect garbage on time

Rongo town and several surrounding centers streets sweepers have gone on strike over six months salary arrears y county government.

Rongo town and main markets and adjacent centers like Nyaburu, Opapo, Kitere, Riosir and Cham gi Wadu have been affected with choking garbage after sweepers had a peaceful demonstration at county headquarters.

The demonstrations attempted to seek redress from Ministry of Environment offices from Chief Officer Joshua Ngwala to no avail.

“We were employed on September last year and we have not been paid ever since with some paltry payment, we are facing Christmas holidays and schools being re-opened without our money,” Jack Odira a sweeper said.

Angry sweepers said since May they were promised payment after a meeting with governor Okoth Obado to no avail.

Rongo sub-county administrator Edward Okello said the garbage collection problem has been compounded wit broken down vehicles too.

Okello, said paying the sweepers will be paid under the pending bill with each earning about Sh4,800 per month, depending on days worked and stations placed.
