Obado receives 50,000 vaccine doses against PPR livestock disease

Migori governor Okoth Obado received national government and partners from International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to receive vaccine against livestock disease.

Obado led in receiving 50,000 vaccines against Pestes des Petit Ruminants (PPR).

“This will help us make strides towards the eradication of PPR which is commonly referred to as sheep and goat plague,” he said.

Harry Kimtai, the PS in Livestock department will help Kenya in eradicating the disease by 2027.

Kimtai who speaking from Gunga Village in Nyatike Sub-County during the vaccination dirve.

“We are receiving these in support of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in conjunction of The state department for Livestock, we are doing this because we have strategy to eradicate PPR by 2027, but the global target is to eradicate it by 2030,” Kimtai said.

Hamisi Muo the FAO deputy country representative who reiterated FAO’s commitment towards supporting agriculture. 

“Small stock plays a critical role in supporting rural livelihoods and a loss may mean a child not going to school, a family sleeping hungry or inability to afford medical health. It is for this reason that FAO prioritizes such a disease like PPR.” Muo said.

He said FAO and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) seeks to eradicate the disease for it to be the second livestock disease to be eradicated after rinderpest which was eradicated from the globe in 2011.
