Migori’s St. John vicar Onyango replaces Ochiel, elected new Southern Diocese ACK bishop

Migori’s Simon Edward Onyango is the newly elected bishop of Anglican Church of Kenya’s Southern Diocese to replace James Ochiel.

Onyango, flunked by jubilant Christians at St. John church in Migori town where he was the vicar before his election was elected on Saturday after Ochiel took an early retirement.

A total of 16 representatives from the four counties and seven from the national office elected him when he vied with venerable Phillip Omwaga and reverend canon Joshua Agulo to cover Migori, Kisii, Homa Bay, Kisii and Nyamira counties.

The election was done at the diocese’s headquarters at ACK Cathedral in Homa Bay town after two of five contestants were disqualified.

Canon (retired) Samson Amollo who welcomed the new bishop lauded the process which he termed as peaceful.

Onyango said he will unify the churches and lauded his two colleagues who vied with him.
