CORONAVIRUS: Omena fishermen want curfew lifted along Lake Victoria

As the Government continues to enforce the curfew times, the fishing community along Muhuru Bay beaches on Lake Victoria wants it lifted in the area.

Fishermen, led by Muhuru Bay MCA Hevron Maira complain to Migori News that 7pm to 5am curfew is the time they undertake fishing in the lake especially for omena, or fresh water sardines called ochong’a which is a main ingredient in animal feed.

The fishermen are now forced to strictly operate for only two hours in the afternoon between one o’clock to 6p.min the evening

The fishermen complain that the daytime they go into the water for their activities does not enable them get much as compared to the night hours they have been used to in the past.

They claim the curfew is going to affect their economy and also expose their families into beggars and hungry lot as it is directly affecting their livelihood.

The fishermen now the Government to reconsider their business activities as it affect the economic status of the region by uplifting the curfew in their areas of operations.
