An orphan boy who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education thrice is staring at a bleak future because of lack of fees.

Joseph Odoyo, 19,scored 414 marks out of a possible 500 in the results released by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed six years after he passed the same exams and failed to join Alliance Boys.

Odoyo has gone back to selling charcoal with mother as he hopes to join secondary school after sitting at Kakrao Secondary School in Suna East.

“I am praying to be called at Starehe Boys Center where I can get a scholarship, or get help for me to realize my dream of being a lawyer,” Odoyo said.

Odoyo first sat for KCPE at Kadika Primary School in Migori in 2011 where he scored 361 marks, he couldn’t join secondary school after unsuccessfully trying to apply for numerous scholarships in the country.

In 2012 he again sat for national examinations in the same school where he scored 389 out of 500.

“I was happy to have been called to Alliance Boys in Nairobi, but when I failed to secure the chance because of poverty I couldn’t afford to go there,” he said.

Kakrao Primary School head teacher Okello Adero said they encouraged the student to re-join school after his certificates were burnt and losing hope.

“He used to work as a shamba boy in the area, as administration we paid for his fees and registered him. He didn’t disappoint us,” Adero said.
