DCIO seeks to bar speaker Boaz, deputy and clerks from office over corruption

The Director of Criminal Investigations has sought court orders to bar speaker Boaz Okoth and eight others from accessing office over corruption.

The move has thrown the management of the Migori county assembly into a spin.

On January 18 DCIO in a letter signed by John Kariuku and copied to Migori governor Okoth Obado sought the orders at the Kisumu High Court.

The DCIO sought the order following a criminal case 661/297/2020 where several top county assembly leadership and contractors faced offences of conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption contrary to section 47A(3).

Those sought to be barred include:

  • Boaz Owiti- The speaker
  • David Chacha, the deputy speaker and Bukuria Central MCA
  • Kachieng’ MCA Brian Osodo
  • Wasimbete MCA Roland Asiga
  • Tagare MCA Nicholas Ngabiya
  • Acting clerk Emmanuel Abala King’wara
  • Tom Opere the Clerk secretary to the board
  • Steve Omondi Okello the Supply Chain management officer
  • Clifford Jobando a member of the board.

According to Anti-corruption and Economic Crimes law section 63, it calls for suspension if charged with corruption and economic crime “a pubic officer who is charged with corruption or economic crime shall be suspended, a laf pay, with effect from the date of charge.”

The group and directors of several companies were on December 3 released on a bond of Sh3million each after denying corruption charges.

Appearing before Kisumu chief magistrate peter gesora, they denied the charges with the case being set to be mentioned on February 15.
