Nominated MP and Migori Woman Representative aspirant in 2022 Dennitah Ghati has said parents should be keener to stem out teen pregnancy during Covid 19 pandemic.

Ghati said announcement by Education CS George Magoha that school re-opening time is extended should put parents on high alert to be on the look out to fight teen pregnancy cases.

“We have seen a spike of recorded cases of teen pregnancy and sex fueled crime in Migori county and across the country, the buck stops securely with parents,” Ghati said.

He said while some parents have been calling on police and public administrators like chiefs to tackle the vice, the ball stops at their court.

“We have parents as the first line of defense on their children to tame teen pregnancy and sexual abuse. What police an chiefs should do is compliment their job,” she said.

The legislator, who is nominated by ODM to represent People With Disability (PWD), said most parents have been relying on learning institutions to instill discipline on their children.

She said the current economic meltdown should not allow parents to stop caing about their children.

“We have parents who in cases of sexual crimes have been trying to hide cases from courts, this is in bad faith,” she said.

She said society should give victims support and avoid stigma to end the vice.

“We have six months until schools re-open, that is a very long time and parents should take up responsibility on how to help their children,” she said.

She said joint effort should be placed by all stakeholder to stem out teen pregnancy and early marriages which she said will result in school drop out in the future.
