Sh250,000 AIs to boost Migori Dairy production

Dairy farming in Migori County has a received major boost after a livestock research institute in partnership with Migori County Government trained and equipped eight Artificial Inseminators.

The inseminators drawn from the livestock department will serve the entire county were handed all the insemination kits to the tune of Kshs 250,000 that included facilitation and other improvement in the dairy breeding sector.

Nairobi based International Livestock Research Institute identified Migori County suitable for dairy breeding under Accelerated Value Chain Development Dairy Project.

The institute led by Dr. Romanus Kiome trained one inseminator from each of the eight sub counties in Migori County on the effective and efficient ways of administering Artificial Insemination on dairy cows.

The eight Artificial Insemination kits were bought by the Migori County Government.

Migori County Livestock Chief Officer Elijah Gambere said the training and equipping of Artificial Inseminators is a major step of boosting dairy farming which the county government has invested millions of shillings in it.

Gambere said since 2015 Migori County Government has bought over three hundred dairy cows distributed within the eight sub- counties.

“I believe this is major step towards fulfilling school milk feeding launched by Governor Zachary Obado,” Gambere said.

The Chief Officer said the programme will lead to provision adequate milk to Migori residents hence creation of jobs opportunities to the youths and compliment a multi-million project issued earlier.
