Kidney patients will get reduced costs for treatment after a new renal center was set up at Migori County referral hospital Governor Okoth Obado has said.

This is after the County Government partnered with the National Government in the managed equipment services programme to set up the renal center at the Migori County referral hospital

Governor Obado said the county had many helpless patients who were struggling to get treatment elsewhere that would benefit from the new facility.

“Chronic kidney disease is a serious and a common condition in Migori County and requires deliberate and concerted efforts to control and manage,” Obado said.

The governor said the facility will cut costs for patients who were seeking the treatment at different health facilities in other counties.

“This has prevented Migori people from seeking timely treatment that often led to preventable mortalities,” he said

With an investment of Ksh. 18 million, the renal facility has a bed space of five and can accommodate one more.

Obado said patients will be charged at subsidized cost of Ksh. 9,500 per dialysis per session.

“We are not after making profits here, but we are after service delivery,” Obado said.

One of the first patients to be admitted at the center Stanley Miheso lauded the move by the county to set up the renal center.

“I have been spending a lot of money travelling to and from different facilities outside the county but this facility will help cut the cost by almost half,” Miheso said.

He added, “I will now just be walking from home to this place and back without stressing about a lot of expenditure.”

County Minister for Health Dr. Iscah Oluoch urged residents to register with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to enable them access health services.

“To enable our patients access this dialysis and other treatments at the facility, we are going to ensure that they register with the insurance fund,” Dr. Oluoch said.
