The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture (JKUAT) and Japan Government funded JICA project has trained 50 women from Migori to be champions of value addition in several sectors.

The training was geared towards encouraging women to add value to their products so as to achieve maximum profit leading to financial empowerment.

Speaking at Kehancha town during the launch of the project, Migori Women Representative Dr. Pamela Odhiambo said the program will be rolled out across the county.

“What the project seeks to attain is creating cottage industries across the county that will employ informal sector in women,” Odhiambo said.

She said their immediate target was omena from Lake Victoria which will be packaged for national consumption and the export market.

“The main aim is capacity build, we may be a little backward in terms of technology, but available resources will spur the sector,” she said.

The women representative said she will make use of affirmative action funds to facilitate the 50 trained women to teach others across the county.

JKUAT vice-chancellor Prof. Romanus Odhiambo urged local farmers and county governments to invest more in value addition by liasing with researchers in universities.

The director of Extension Services at JKUAT Joan Mugamvya, who will be in charge of the project said similar training picked in Central and Eastern section of the country.
