Obado supports mix farming

Migori county governor Okoth Obado has appealed to Kuria farmers to practice mix farming.

He said the move for mix farming will assist farmers better especially when sugar cane production reduces.

“We want to see our farmers get involved in mix cropping and this will make them not only depend on one crop for sustenance,” he said.

The governor also advised the locals to venture into farming of soya beans, cassava and dairy cows to change the agricultural production of the county.

“We have new breeds of cows that grow fast and gives a lot of milk production, let us improve our agricultural methods by embracing crops like soy beans that grow fast and are productive”. He said.

Governor Obado was addressing residence of Ntimaru East and Getambwega wards when he distributed cheques worth 4.2M to students in the area.

Governor Obado also warned farmers against using companies that mistreat farmers during payment leading to poor relationship of the two.

However governor Obado dismissed claims that he is working with tobacco companies in the county to infringe farmers’ payments.

“Am in the fore front of supporting our farmers and currently am working hard to bring a tobacco company in Migori county, if that is still not done we will look for a better market for our farmers.” He said.

Obado also said he is against the zoning system used by tobacco companies in the county as this makes the companies enjoy monopoly which leads to mistreating of farmers.

Governor Obado was in a tour in China last month for a possible construction of a tobacco company in the county and he said all the process is moving well.

“When I was in China i received friends who will help me construct a tobacco company in our count6y and this will see our farmers get Sh.117 per kilo instead of the Sh.17 they give you currently and that will boost us a county”. He added

Migori County is known for large production of Sugar cane and tobacco as the major cash crops.
