Mukuyu Secondary dorm razed down

A school in Migori county is counting loses after fire broke out in one of the dormitories Tuesday morning, leaving students and the school management in panic.

Mukuyu Secondary school in Uriri sub-county lost property worth millions of shillings after a raging fire was seen in one of the dormitories leading villagers to mill to the school to witness for themselves.

The 8 AM inferno completely razed down a dormitory that housed 131 students and part of a nearby science laboratory.

Students with the help of villagers watched helplessly as property was reduced to ashes while others tried to contain the fire from spreading to other buildings.

The school’s principal Madam Ann Oloo in a phone interview said the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

“The incident is unfortunate and a big blow to the school. The cause of the fire is yet to be established,” the Principal said.

She said that no students was injures during the Tuesday morning occurrence.

She said the school had received help from the county government and Red cross.

“They school has received bedding and makeshift tents to temporarily accommodate the students, ” Madam Oloo said.

Madam Oloo said the students will not be sent home and the school was looking for an amicable solution.

This comes at a time when students in several schools in Migori county had gone on rampage and destroyed property worth millions after posting poor results in the 2015 KCSE results.
