Migori town residents bathing naked on rivers to be arrested- chief

Migori town residents bathing naked along river Migori, Nyasare and Onyinjo risk being arrested for spreading cholera, a chief has said.

Town traders accused local administration from both Migori county and national governments over laxity to implement sanitation orders amid the spread of cholera in Migori County.

They said that men, women and children publicly bath in rivers within town causing an eye sore and health hazard as government has ignored.

“Where I sell clothes on the bridge I can openly see women, men and children bathing at the bottom of the bridge with disregard to public eyes,” Moses Okinyi a trader said.

He said the county and its neighbours had experienced cholera outbreaks due to the negligent and shortage of equipment and drugs among others were part of the challenges that the local health care centers had been facing for a long time.

According to one of the market users Moses Okinyi, they have complained many times to the local government through the area senior chief William Ongoro but he does not really care.

But Ongoro blamed the county government and public health department for not putting in place the by-laws adding that they are ready to join hands.

“We know lives are in danger and we will organise a swoop soon to arrest all culprits,” he said.
A spot check by Migori News revealed public bathers at the rivers affected.
