Migori muslim community want ease of ID issuance, hold demo

Migori county muslim community held demonstrations over hurdles they face in getting national identification.

They expressed their concerns over alleged discrimination by the government when issuing Identification Cards, they lamented they are not being treated like Kenyans.

Sheik Alli Mohamed, chairperson of Imman in Migori, said their children have been rejected.

“Our children are being discriminated against when they are applying for the document, it can take upto three years before one gets the ID,” Said Sheik Mohamed.

He said they have been subjected into tough procedures.

“Most of the Muslims living in Migori are even speaking the local dialect (Luo) yet they are being denied the document,” he said.

Abbiba Alli a resident of Migori town said that he came to Migori in early 1977 from Garisa but up to date she cannot trace her family back there.

“But my sons and daughters can not get the ID when time reaches for application,” Alli said.

The officer in charge of registrar denied the allegations.

Migori County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich said they will find the an amicable solution.
