Migori County government urged to invest more in disaster management

Migori County Government has been asked to allocate more resources for disaster management and preparedness.

A team from Germany who visited the county on a training mission noted that lack of fire fighting machines and life saving equipment and skills ” signalled a catastrophe in waiting”.

” Parts of the county like Nyatike is prone to floods, inter-clan clashes in Kuria, boat mishapa in Lake Victoria and road accidents and require adequate preparedness and mitigation interventions from the county administration,” said Ms Carola Gerhadinga of the Land Aid organisation.

She told a training workshop at a Migori hotel that they had come to build capacity of the Migori county Government officials and Red Cross teams working in the region.

” Since disasters occur anytime, we want to make sure that there are enough communication facilities and other infrastructure to enhance real time responses in a bid to save lives,” added Ms Gerhadinga.

Other team members Ms Nina Gremme , Ms Stephanie Muhlbauer and the organisation’s country director Mr Peter Nyagilo noted that their survey had shown that most county Governnents in the country were ill-prepared to handle disasters.

A chief officer from the Department of Environment and Disaster Mr Joshua Ngwala said they were in the process of procuring relevant disaster equipment to enhance their responses to emergency situations.

Partcipants at the meeting were trained on the basic first aid skills.
