Political leaders have asked Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi and Director Of Criminal Investigation Mr. George Kinoti to move in on Sangwenya group that is spreading fear and tension in Migori County.

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot speaking at Nyaroha Girls in Kuria East yesterday asked Dr. Matiangi to do away with the group because it was harassing residents and leaders in the region.

“Honourable Matiangi must now investigate and find out who these Sangwenya that are harassing leaders and beating up locals are,” Senator Cheruiyot said.

Senator Cheruiyot said Kenyans have the right to freedom of speech and that leaders and residents of Migori County were free to give dissenting opinion without being threatened.

The Jubilee Party Senator added that all Kenyans were in the Country by right and have all the rights to access government services without being forced to align to another person’s demands.

The Senator said it was shameful that a leader could not stand to speak about matters that are  affecting his people in the County.

He said he will take up this issue of Sangwenya for discussion in parliament because it was getting out of control.

“When we parliament resumes, I’ll take up this issue with your senator (Ochillo Ayacko) and if he does not bring it to the floor of the house then I’ll do it for Migori residents,” Cheruiyot said.

Member of Parliament Marwa Kitayama asked Migori leaders to stand strong against the Sangwenya group.

Hon. Kitayama said Sangwenya had crippled service delivery at the Migori County government to the extent that some County Ministers had to allegedly consult the group before making any decision.

He wondered why no action had been taken against the group despite the Sangwenya storming into Migori County Assembly premises severally and attacking MCA’s.

“How is it that Sangwenya have attacked the County Assembly of Migori close to six times and we have a County Commander of Police who has said nothing,” Hon. Kitayama said.

The MP also asked if the government was not seeing the impending danger Migori will have at the end of the regime of the current government.

“Will these Sangwenya not ‘eat out’ Migori residents when the current leadership that is sponsoring them leaves office and they have no source of income?” Kitayama asked.

Hon. Kitayama said like Mungiki in Nairobi and Central regions, Sangwenya was being tolerated and had become fashionable but warned it could soon get out of hand and wreck havoc to Migori residents

But the Kuria East legislator said it would only take courage of local leaders, just like the likes of the late Minister John Michuki against Mungiki that led to its fall.

They were speaking yesterday in Kuria East during the burial of the mother of area MP.
