An inheritance fight by two widows and family members of a illegal gun holder in Kuria ended up with police arresting two family members and impounding two guns, four teargas canisters and several bullets.

A family in Ntunyigi village in Kuria West constituency buried their kin on August 25 after he passed on last week, but a fight over how his property should be distributed including his guns led into a fallout that had police to be involved.

Kuria West police boss Cleti Kimaiyo said the deceased has two widows, while one of them wanted their late husband tools of trade to be taken to police the other refused which divided the family with some alerting the police.

“The deceased was a illegal firearm holder and when the family started distributing his property his two widows started fighting over who should inherit the two guns and the teargas canisters,” Kimaiyo said.

“We arrived at the deceased’s homestead and we were taken to a makeshift house in the farm by one of the widow where an AK-47 rifle whose serial number was rubbed was found together with 16 rounds of 7.62mm special bullets were recovered. The second gun was found hidden in a box, it a mini brown pistol with a serial number 291706 manufactured in 1985,” the police boss said.

The deceased second home, two kilometers away produced four teargas canisters manufactured in 2020, a khaki rifle sling and seven 7.65mm bullets after a search.

“They were hidden in a safe which we broke into and found them in a green polythene bag.We have arrested the two widows and are withholding their names as we continue with investigations,” he said.

The office said that the firearms are kept at the kehancha police station armory pending investigation and ballistic analysis.
