With Kuppet elections around the corner, two Migori county aspirants have put to task elected officials over safeguarding teacher’s welfare amid Covid 19.

Ken Boro who is vying for the position of the Executive Secretary and Assistant Executive Secretary aspirant Kenus Nyadimo have tasked te union elected officials to spearhead talks with the ministry of education on closure of institutions for what’s they term as insecurity of teachers due to the outbreak of Covid-19 second wave.

They said current Kuppet leadership has shown lack of concern after atleast 17 candidates and 33 teachers test positive  for the virus with one principal succumbing to the disease in Mombasa.

“We demand the national office led by the union’s secretary general Akello Misori to convince the ministry of education to close schools before the number of infections increase in the institutions,” Boro said.

“The ministry has insisted on keeping the learning institutions open even as the pandemic continue to bite a move that we do not support,” he added.

Nyadimo said “there are no adequate safety equipment in our schools and therefore this doesn’t tally with the ministry of health protocols.”

Nyadimo noted that most teachers have been depressed with the numbers going up following the outbreak of the pandemic in March this year that was followed by massive closure of institutions across the country.

“Its a pity that the nation continues to loose good brains responsible for impacting knowledge to its children through depression. I urge the relevant offices that of the ministry and TSC to find a way of employing counselors for emotional support of teachers in all public schools.” Reiterated Nyadimo.
