Ikerege MCA Merezza Tingo through a local organisation has built the Migori county first community library to end female genital mutilation in the Kuria community

The Maclyne Community Library in Ikerege Ward will help serve 12 primary schools in the ward and the general public.

The library has been built by Msichana Empowerment Kuria, a local NGO found by Natalie Robi who is the MCA’s daughter.

The organisation and Jomo Kenyatta Foundation publisher donated books.

“Over 95 per cent of girls in Kuria community still face circumcision despite the vice being criminalized in the country. The library will form a venue for health clubs in schools to meet twice a month to educate pupils about FGM,” Robi said.

Tingo said they donated two laptops while Migori education executive Michael Ogutu donated three desktop computers from the county government including books, balls and volleyball nets.

Ogutu said this is the first library in “Migori county and it is built in a rural center instead of town.”

She said the library is the best as the ward lacks established libraries which has affected English and mathematics subjects.

“The reading environment in the library will help boost performance among pupils. We will target the class three pupils locked out by failure of Jubilee government to offer laptops in time,” she said.

The library was launched on Thursday.
