Government gives Migori town sex workers Sh1k-a-week as men disappear over Covid-19

Migori town sex workers in have lauded government to come to their aid by offering them Sh1,000 per week as essential services providers to cushion them against effects of Covid 19.

Speaking to Migori News in Apida and Nyasare estates where they reside and conduct their nightlife business, the ladies lauded the national Government for the stipends.

The amount has been disbursed through mobile money.

Belinda Awuor, a beneficiary, said the money has cushioned them at these times of the Corona virus pandemic that has caused a lot of economic hiccups across the globe.

“Bars and restaurants where we used to pick our clients remained closed, which affected efforts to put food on the table for our children,” Awuor said.

She said the stipends have placed a smile on their faces.

Another lady Lucy Okatch who also worked in the estate bar and restaurant said that the money has made her get some food for her family of four that has been struggling since the pandemic started ravaging most parts of the country.

“The money is little compared to what we used to make, but it is better as it has kept us going,” se said.

At the same time, another lady of the same trade said that the money is little and the Government should add some more to help them be cushioned against the hunger pangs brought as a result of the pandemic.

She said that the pandemic has really affected their trade and appreciates the efforts done by the national Government to cushion the vulnerable families in the slums and other informal settlements areas across the country but more needs to be done…
