Four Mabera drunkards dead, eight in critical condition after drinking poisoned chang’aa

Four Mabera drunkards succumbed after drinking poisoned chang’aa while eight others are still fighting for their lives.

The drinking spree which turned tragic has left Kubweye villagers in Kuria West sub-county still reeling in shock.

Kubweye village elder Patel Matiko Nyamohanga said that the victims were rushed to two hospitals in Mabera town where the four were pronounced dead on arrival.

“The other eight are still fighting for their lives,” he said.

Kuria West police boss Cleti Kimaiyo said the other eight are in critical condition.

“So far four other have been referred to Migori Referral Hospital as we have launched investigations over the incident,” Kimaiyo said.

Villager said the victims started complaining of poor vision, breathing problems and difficulty in talking, at first they thought it was normal effect of alcohol before being alarmed when other drinkers complained of the same effects.

Debra Marwa and Chacha Denis decried the way the police have handled the fight on illicit brew in the villages in Kuria West and blamed the local administrators for the escalation of illicit liquor dens in the area.
