Farmers advised to use current rains plant crops before it stops before April

Lake Victoria Observing System chairman Obade Milewa wants farmers along Lake Victoria Basin use the current rain to plant crops.

Addressing press in Migori town on Monday, the weather man advised farmers to make good use of current downpour to prepare their lands and plant crops immediately after their observation indicated that the current rains may stop abruptly before April.

“We are continuing to get rainfall and this one has been caused by the failure of high pressure belt over Mozambique coast which is getting surge of moist air making areas bordering Kisii, Mount Elgon and Congo basin experience intensive rainfall,” he stated.

He however said the current rainfall may proceed throughout February and so the urgency to plant crops in due time before it stops abruptly.

Milewa also slammed the Meteorological Department over the much publicised El Nino rainfall which was predicted initially suggesting that the one experienced since December last year to date is just but normal heavy rainfall.

“I once said that the current rainfall which was predicted by the country’s weather department was not El Nino as it was said, what we have seen is just normal heavy rainfall,” he added.

He further revealed that having studied the behaviour of mango tree for the last two decades it confirms that the rains will continue little longer then it will stop as shown by current new leaves development.

Migori County and its environ have seen most farmers continuing to plant their crops to catch up with the rains being experienced.
