Drama as Oruba estate notorious chang’aa brewer arrested

Residents of Dip area in Oruba sub location in Suna West sub-county were treated to a rare debacle when a renowned chang’aa brewer was arrested.

Syprina Auma caused a stir as police officers from Migori police station raided her home attracting the attention of members of the public from the nearby Migori market.

Auma started shouting at the top of her voice when she spotted cuff wielding police officers as she boasted of her outlawed activity.

“I am Auma and everybody knows that I make chang’aa, ” Auma exclaimed.

The elderly woman was arrested after the area chief in conjunction with village elders caught up with her as they were combing the area of for brewers of the illicit brew and thereafter informing the police.

The woman however baffled many onlookers when she admitted that she had been arrested not once, not twice, confessing that she will be out of custody soon.

“Many chiefs have come and gone, you are not the first one to call policemen to arrest me,” the woman retorted.

The woman who lives in a semi-permanent house and has a chain of rental houses made of mud said she had no steady source Of income.

She added, “I was not blessed with kids, I survive on chang’aa,” Auma explained.

Speaking to the press during the operation, the area subchief Charles Ouma said there was am increase of chang’aa brewers in the area.

He said he feared that this would lead to an increase in crime and the government wouldn’t sit back and watch.

“The government is fighting chang’aa by all means. We are aware that some youth who consume chang’aa end up engaging in criminal activities,” the chief said.

The assistant chief however said that they encountered several challenges in fighting the menace including being pelted with stones

The woman was found in possession Of 1200 litres of raw chang’aa in two 100 litre skyplast drums and in a distiller drum concealed in a fireplace.
