The supremacy battle for Uriri Constituency has been set off with the Saturday by-election of Central Kanyamkago ward pitting governor Okoth Obado and aspirant Mark Nyamita.

The ward with 5,868 voters and 14 polling centers fell vacant after the death of Michael Osongo last September with five aspirants ready to roll.

Alex Akugo, who was defeated by Osongo in last polls is Dominic Akugo’s brother. Akugo is Administration Director at Obado’s office and has been bankrolling the campaigns.

Nyamita’s elder brother Ken is also in the ballot and got a warm reception at Osongo’s funeral to address the
crowd despite pro-Obado organisers denying him a chance.

Dominic and Mark Nyamita have openly campaigned for two.

Other aspirants are Godfrey Odera (former councilor), Paul Ambayo (NGO) and Dan Oyugi (Banker).

Odera told Migori News on Tuesday that aspirants will be gauged through policies insisting that the ward has more political intricates that will affect popularity of the two governor aspirants for taking active parts in the campaign.

“We can have one family controlling both county and ward politics, that is in bad faith,” Odera said.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will hold elections for the seat on March 22 together with Mumberes Maji/Mazuri ward in Baringo County.
