Two hundred students from the poor, orphan and vulnerable families and background will benefit from a scholarship of Sh. 20million to help them continue with their secondary education in Migori county.

The initiative that was started last year by the Migori county Governor Zachary Okoth Obado will see children from poor background in Migori County continue with their Secondary Education.

Speaking in the event, Governor Okoth Obado said that the initiative is aimed at helping pupils from the poor background many of whom are orphans and vulnerable and had perfomed well in their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.

“The sponsorship will see the poor, bright but needy students continue with their high school
education that has in the future rendered many difficult in getting school fees and living them out of the education and future prospects” he said.

Obado said that the students who were selected last year by the county government will improve the education level of the County and also to make a step towards making the students complete their education.

The Governor promised that the county will keep its promise of educating the poor and also select more students who have perfomed well in the class eight education last year and will also help the poor in getting access to high education loans that will help the complete their education.

“We will not stop doing this, the county Government will sponsor the students who are now going to form two this year and will look for more poor students who are unable of paying secondary school fees to make sure they finish their education,” he said.

Tracy Roselyne Atieno , 14, from Rongo sub county is a total orphan and a form two at Asumbi Girls High School in Homa Bay says that the sponsorship has enabled her to see the inside of the high school as she had nowhere to turn to get her school fees.

“The initiative has made me and many other poor orphans in the county get educated at the a cost that the county facilitates and that has made many of us have hopes for the future progress in our lives, I remember i was not sent for fee the whole of last year, ”she said

Many of the students had the challenges of adapting to the environment at the school that has made the poor be at par with the rich at different spheres in the schools they learn at.

Obado appreciated the efforts done by the students in the past one year.

“I am happy that my students have performed well and i encourage you to keep with the same spirit of working hard for your lives, ” he added.

The programme intends to get at least five poor students in every ward in Migori County for a full sponsorship in all the 8-4-4 system .

Another bunch of 200 students who will join form one this year will also get the sponsorship.
