Migori News had the chance to visit the largest fish cage farm in East Africa at Lake Victoria Sindo beach,

Homa Bay county in Kenya. Victory Farm has seen efforts to increase fish production in Lake Victoria bearing fruits despite a biting shortage of fish in the region and entire country.

The scarcity has seen importation of fish from China in major towns such as Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Siay.

Others are imported from Lake Turkana and Lake Naivasha. But Victory Farm has set up 500 fish cages in Lake Victoria with a capacity of producing 8000 metric tons of fish annually.

Victory Farms’ Chief Aquaculture Officer Steve Moran said they started its operations at Rowo village in 2015.

The farm also produces fingerlings which they give to local farmers who undertake fish production in ponds in Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori and Kisumu.

He said the fingerlings are distributed to the farmers free of charge as a corporate social responsibility.

Kenya currently has a fish deficit of 400,000 metric tons of fish per annum.
