Nyatike locals have been told to be aware of the water borne diseases that may arise from the current elninho rains in the area.

While addressing two different camps at Nyora and Kabuto in North Kadem ward, migori governor Okoth Obado pledged to work with other organizations to help curb the flood crisis in the area.

“I would request our people living around this area to maintain hygiene during this rainy period so as to avoid infections from the water borne diseases in the camps,” he said.

Apart from the water borne diseases, Obado assured the locals of their security in the camps and called upon other organizations to join rescue those in camps through different donations.

However governor Obado said the county government is yet to receive any funds for elninho control from the national government.

Obado requested the National government to move with speed and complete the construction of Dykes along river Kuja so as to avoid the occurrence of such flood disaster in the region.

“We have had meetings with the national government over a possible control, we want the national government to allocate more funds for the construction of dykes along River Kuja for a long term control of floods but so far we have not received any funding from them”. He said.

This is not the first time Nyora and Kabuto are experiencing floods due to heavy rains in the region.
Heavy rains in the region have forced over one hundred and twenty household displaced and settled at different camps in Nyora and Kabuto primary schools.

Area MCA Boaz Okoth appreciated the efforts done by organizations like the Kenya Red cross and the County Disaster and Environment management teams following the flood disaster.

Migori county government distributed basic facilities like Mosquito nets, bar of soaps, food stuffs among other materials for the two camps.

On Saturday five people were killed after a matatu they were travelling in was swept away by floods in the area after River Kuja bursts its banks following heavy rains.

Obado said he will avail all the funds allocated for El Nino control if the national government will give it out.

“I have made some inquiries to the national government over the so called “El Nino Funds” but I have not been given any clear guideline as to when and how much we will be given”. He added.

The national government allocated some funds that would help counties during El Nino rains.
