(VIDEO) Kangeso Villagers Raise Own Bursary To Aid Needy Students

Kangeso villagers from Rongo Sub County have resorted to communal fundraiser groups to support their children in school fees and other basic needs.

Morice Orwa, the chairperson of the community-led initiative, most of the parents have undergone tough challenges while raising the fee for their children, with no one to turn to.

This led them to come together and join hands to elevate themselves.

The Kangeso community managed to consolidate a total of 61 learners in different clusters who needed the support.

Maurice Opiyo, a community neighbour who was invited to help in the fund drive outlined that he was moved with the communal approach idea when he received the invitation.

Opiyo noted that it is disturbing to continually meet learners moving up and down out of school due to fee challenges.

However, he outlines that all they are doing is only to supplement what the government was doing to keep learners in school.

Ms Lavenda Otieno who is a learner at St Paul University and also a beneficiary of the initiative said that the amount that they will get from the communal support will boost them when going back to school.

She said that their needs might be small but when parents are left alone to cater for them, they barely meet their minimum needs.

The drive managed to equip every learner with books, pens and small shopping and also a cheque of shillings 5,000 for fees.
