One person sustained gunshot injuries in Migori town as the police engaged demonstrators in running battles on Monday.

John Otieno said he was shot at by the police in Migori town as he fled from the scene where he had fallen of a motorcycle after being confronted by police.

According to Otieno, he wanted to meet a friend in town when he decided to take the Migori – Ombo road route before the unfortunate happened.

“The town was full of demonstrators and several roads had been blocked. I weighed options and the Ombo road was less hostile,” Otieno narrated.

He said that it was than that he met a battalion of anti-riot police who distracted them making him, and the rider he had taken to fall off their motorbike.

“We were un-armed and raised our hands in the air as a sign of surrender but the police approached fast and descended on us with beatings but their focus was more on me,” he recalled.

The enraged man narrated that he decided to flee since their pleas were not heeded and beatings intensified.

“It was at this point that I was shot at on the left thigh before I was rushed to Ombo mission hospital where I was stitched and released,” he explained.

Showing off the bullet hole on his trouser, Otieno said he was lucky as the bullet bruised him but did not get to his thigh born.

Migori County police commandant David Kirui however rubbished the claims saying people were trying to bring up issues from previous demonstrations.

Earlier, in a similar demonstration, prison waders shot at and seriously injured five people over allegedly pelting their lorry ferrying prisoners with stones.

The Monday incident happened as residents of Migori joined their counterparts countrywide in demonstrations against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Migori leaders were conspicuously absent in the riots that drew the largest number of demonstrators since the inception of the demos against IEBC.

The demonstrations kicked off on Sunday evening in Migori and stopped before beginning at 6.30 AM Monday morning where all roads were blocked as all business premises remained clossed/
