Micontrap-Kenya, a local county NGO, has embarked on a funds drive to help girls from Kuria and Maasai escaping Female Genital Mutilation.

Micontrap also donated a wheel chair and food stuff, through Rotary Kenya Nairobi office to Mr. Otwondi from Kaler area in Nyatike constituency.

Benter Ombwayo, a Norway based and Micontrap-Kenya coordinator said they carried out the drive even though leaders Migori First lady Helen Obado, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and his Nyatike counterpart Edick Anyanga did not turn up.

“We invited them but they gave us a no show, they however pledged to join us in supporting girls from the area,” she said.
She added: “we have a gap in Migori county which lacks a proper rescue center and juvenile holding facility for children who are affected by FGM and other ailments,”

Colleta Bwahi, Micontrap mobiliser said they took the initiative after she house over seven girls who escaped FGM in her home around Iraha area, Kuria West sub-county.

“We need to have a safe haven for children who escape the cut, which so far national and Migori county government have not created. The one at Komotobo mission and in Manga in Nyamira county are not enough,” she said.

Mary Abadha, the Micontrap-Kenya chairperson said they managed to collect slightly over Sh130,000 and opted for invited leaders to live up to their pledge.

Rongo Children Officer Jared Nyatigi was the master of ceremony at the event held in Muslim Primary School, Migori town.

“Girls who escape the cut are shunned by their parents and face a bleak future. While I worked in Kuria West I had to live with a girl for years after she escaped FGM. So this move is lauded,” he said.
