A Migori County forest conservator has warned businessmen who still engage in illegal logging and outlawed charcoal burning in government restricted forest that they will be arrested and tried before courts of law.

Abuto Omolo Migori County Ecosystem Conservator while speaking to the press at his office in Migori town, said the government has directed all security organs to safeguard 32 public community hills in Migori County.

He said they had successfully arrested and prosecuted over ten cases linked to illegal logging and charcoal burning since the government issued a decree on public community forests one month ago.

‘Most of the arrests came from Kuria, Awendo and Nyatike Sub-Counties,’ Omolo told the journalists who visited his office to follow a case where a lorry was nabbed carrying illegal poles in Onyinjo within the outskirts of Migori town.

During the incident, a lorry carrying over 800 poles was arrested. He said the street value of the arrested poles is valued at Sh15,000.

According Omolo one man linked to the lorry was arrested while the driver is still at large. He said the arrested man will be taken to court tomorrow.
