Low voter turnout and fear of apathy greeted the first day of mass voter registration in Migori county amid a heavy downpour.

Suna West IEBC returning officer Grace Atieno who spoke on behalf of the county officer Charles Mutai told the press in Migori town that this time they have target of 110,369 new voters.

She said there is fear of voter apathy like in last mass registration drive where Migori only registered only 36,000 new voters against a target if 126,446.

“The apathy on voting has been caused by youths who said most elected leaders have failed to change their lives and fulfill election pledges which saw most shying from registering,” Akinyi said.

She said most new voters also believe that they will only need to register as voters to help individual politicians and need incentives, either in money or food stuff before registering.

“Those who needed inducement in money turned back at centers when they found none,” she said.
