Govt should involve all stakeholders before increasing varsity fees- Rongo chancellor Prof. Elmi

Rongo University chancellor Prof.Mohammed Yusuf Elmi has challenged government to involve all education stakeholders in its bid to increase the higher learning institutions fees.

Elmi said it was prudent for government to increase school fees as proposed, however it must be done consultatively by all stakeholders.

He was speaking during the 5th graduation ceremony of the Rongo University that was done virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The move will learning institutions opportunities to address financial constraints, but it should also be done considerably not leave out any student,” he said.

He said no student should be left out because of lack of affordable school fees.  

He also urged other leaders especially the political class to come out and support learning institutions.

Berias Mogaka Ogutu who represented the principal secretary of education state department for university and research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi said government’s main aim is enhance education through improving the finances of institutions.

“This will improve output especially in research,” he said.

Rongo vice chancellor Prof. Samwel Gudu urged grandaunts to be the ambassadors of the university and ensure they make good use of the knowledge and the skills they found from the university for their livelihood.


Over 800 students graduated with various degrees from the university.
