National government has promised to finish up a Sh90million stalled fish processing plant in Rongo constituency.

Residents had raised concern over the project which has taken long to complete after other similar projects were finalized and are awaiting operations.

The project was to be completed on March this year.

Others are in Tetu (Nyeri County), Lurambi (Kakamega County) and South Imenti (Meru County) which national government will soon commission and hand over to respective counties.

Agriculture CS Felix Koskei said they have already contacted the contractor and look forward in pushing through the matter.

The project which was supposed to be handed over to Migori county government is yet to be completed and the contractor has not been seen on the site for a while.

“This Factory has some pending Civil Works. Which include Removal of all black cotton soils from site including under the raised foundation of the building and replacing with hard core,” Koskei said.

The site also needs construction of waste treatment disposal ponds, installation of water system to the factory and building a car pack.

“The pending works have been contracted and the contractor is on site to complete the factory to pave way for the handing over to the County Government,” Koskei said.

The factory is designed to enhance the domestic, regional and international markets for farmed fish.

The department has also plans to construct a state of the art Fish Quality Laboratory Nairobi, with satellites in Mombasa and Kisumu, to enhance residue monitoring for capture and farmed fish.

County Agriculture and Fisheries Executive Isca Oluoch said among the four, Migori’s project stalled.

“We are consulting with the national government and so far funds have been availed and the contractor is expected to be back on the site this week to complete the work,” she said.
