Legio Maria faithful have called on police to offer them security at God Kweru shrine in Suna West over fears of attacks following prolonged leadership wrangles.

During the Palm Sunday celebrations the church leadership led by Pope Romanus Ong’ombe said they held special prayers after getting information that a group of youths planned to attack them.

The leaders said they were alarmed when a group of three elders met with ong’ombe to convince him to be a grandfather and step down from the post to his rival Pope Raphael Titus Adika.

Adika is based in Kisumu county.

“I was called over the deal and I told them that is like a fiction story to me, I want God’s people to pray in peace at the shrine where our messiah Melkio Ondetto is buried,” the pope said.

Francis Lima Nyangwete, the Legio Maria Bishop for Migori County said that there are allegations that the faction group was planning to invade the Holy Hill.

“We don’t want mayhem to the pontiff and worshippers, we aske the national Government to intervene and provide security at Got Kweru,” he said.

Charles Otieno Agaye, the church administrator said that the cardinals, bishops and other church leaders have refused any attempt to have Adika and Ong’ombe sit down for talks as there is still a court case over leadership.

The sect is faced with numerous leadership wrangles that have resulted into court battles since the death of the church founder Simeon Melkio Ondetto.
