WHOLives has elicited festive mood among hundred of girls fleeing Female Genital Mutilation in Kuria through a donation to four area police stations and six rescue centers.

James Mukundi an officer with WHOLives said so far they have distributed food items, bedding, toiletries and personal effects.

“We started with offering beddings, toiletries and warm clothes for police stations in Isebania, Kegonga, Kehancha and Ntimaru towns after rooms were offered for girls fleeing the cut from main holding cells,” Mukundi said.

He said they undertook the first donation after realizing young girls who sought reprieve in police stations or those being held as part of judicial system lacked place to stay.

“We have been able to offer them toiletries, sanitary towels and food as we anticipate the circumcision period may take longer as school opening will be later in January,” Mukundi said.

While addressing the press in Migori town on Thursday, Mukundi said since the start of circumcision this month  they have visited six rescue centers in the area with the donations.

“Our donation in rescue centers, which include food lasts for a week before we strive to make more donations as we progress,” he said.
