One child died yesterday in the evening while two others alongside the new nanny are fighting for their lives at St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Migori.

The four started developing stomach problems after eating a meal prepared by Belinda Atieno which is suspected to have been laced with poison.

Atieno is said to have packed her belonging and left in a huff.

Her boss Bether Aluoch, said the house help served her children a meal she had prepared but the older ones did not eat as they had gone to play outside the house.

“She prepared some potato fries and cooked bananas which she served to my children and the new house help then packed her belongings and left,” said Aluoch.

The new maid Linda Endekwa said she woke up to sharp pains in her stomach in the middle of the night screaming to alert her boss who then came to her rescue.

Endekwe said she tried to wake up her son who was not responding when she discovered he had died.

Collins Mwanga, a clinical officer at the facility confirmed that there were traces of food poisoning in the patients admitted in the wards.

“We did a lab test and admitted the four patients, unfortunately one of the children passed on while unregoing treatment.” Mwanga said.

Mwanga however said they would ascertain the cause of the death once the results are out.

“The results will take three days to be out and we will give a comprehensive report though the three patients are in a stable condition.” he noted.

The maid is said to have been complaining of harassment by her employer who had been withholding her payment.
