Suna East: Wind destroy Nyikendo Primary

Properties worth over two million shillings were completely destroyed after heavy wind blew the roofs of an entire school as heavy rains continued to cause destruction in Migori County.

During the incidence, the roofs of class one to eight and administration blocks at Nyikendo primary school in Suna East constituency were blown over 100 meters away by a storm.

Julius Kaudo, the school deputy head teacher said nobody was injured during the incidence as the school had already closed for April holidays last week.

“It is just good luck that nobody was in school during the incidence,” he said, adding that the flying iron sheets could have caused serious injuries had the pupils had been in school.

Pius Amara, the Suna North chief said the incidence had been caused by the lack of trees around the school which had made it susceptible to such heavy storm.

“Most of the trees which used to surround the school have since been brought down,” he said, adding that it was important that more trees were planted around the school to avoid a repeat of such incidences.

He appealed to leaders to urgently help the school in the reconstruction process to ensure that learning is not interrupted when the schools reopens next month.

On his part, Migori County Chief Officer for Environment, Natural Resources and Disaster Management Joshua Ngwala has also urged for aid agencies and other donors to step in and help them reconstruct the school.

“The county may not be in a position to meet the cost of everything,” he said, adding that the county will however do all it can to ensure that learning is not interfered with for long.
