Migori residents are living in fear over a Sexually Transmitted Disease nicknamed ‘Jakadala’ which is said to be more deadly than AIDS.

For the past week, rumours on social media over the disease which is said to kill patients within five days of contacting it.

“There is a lot of talk of the disease called Jakadala which rumours said it has terrible signs, already a disease surveillance team is out to ascertain facts,” Isca Oluoch, the county Health Executive confirmed to Migori News.

According to rumours, there is a patient with the disease at Migori County Referral Hospital with others being treated at a local private hospital in Awendo sub-county.

Oluoch said Migori has moved in medical surveillance team to allay fears and medically find facts of the disease.

 “We called the administrator of the private hospital and the clinical officer and they were not positive, our team will start from there,” Oluoch said.

The rumours started from Nyarombo gold mines, in Awendo.

 “The case we have in the referral hospital is not an STI, and the patient has been suffering in the past five years. This is not in the five days rumours we get that a patient can succumb to Jakadala,”Oluoch said.

According to doctors the patient came to Migori from Homa Bay after being stigmatized, and there are plans to have his private parts amputated to help control spread of cancer.

Migori is the fourth county with highest HIV prevalence at 13.3 per cent.
