Migori county nurses on strike

Migori county nurses on strike have vowed to ignore a 24 hours return to work ultimatum issued by governor Okoth Obado today.

Obado earlier gave the 639 striking nurses in all public hospitals in Migori 24 hours to report to work failure to which they shall be sacked.

Obado had just conducted an inspection at the county facility,

“What nurses are demanding from the counties is unrealistic and too big for the counties budget,” Obado said.

He pointed out that the counties budgetary allocation is too little to cater for the huge amounts the nurses are striking over.

But angry nurses reacted to the ultimatum with demonstrations in Migori town insisting they will continue with their strike which started on June 5, and won’t be intimidated.

“Tell Obado we will remain put and we won’t be intimidated. Only our secretary general Seth Panyako can call off the strike,” Maurice Achochi, the Migori county chairman of Kenya National Union of Nurses said.

Panyako said Obado is a member of Council of Governor which signed the CBA agreement with nurses, which he insisted must be respected.

Achochi said they will be on strike until the CBA is fully adhered to and a return to work formula is signed.
