Suspected police officers shot Homa Bay town trader, steals Sh3.5m being taken to bak

A Homa Bay town businessman suffered bullet wounds after suspected thugs believed to be police officers robbed him of sh3.5million he was taking to bank.

Kennedy Obonyo, 35, is an employee at a local beverage depot was shot in the left thigh as he was taking the amount to the bank after Christmas sale boom.

Obonyo, who, was riding on a motorcycle at about 4.30 pm when a salon car with four occupants armed with AK-47 rifles trailed outside a supermarket.

Obonyo fell after being shot and was rushed to hospital as the gang ran away with the cash.

A spent cartridge of 7.62 special was recovered from the scene by police which will be subjected to ballistic tests as the bullet is believed to belong to a police officer.

 β€œIt is rare to find such a rifle out there with common thugs. It could be the work of rogue officers but we are pursuing them,” said a senior officer aware of the probe.

A hunt on the gunmen was launched in the town in vain. Police handling the case said they are also investigating to establish if it was an inside job that exposed the victim.
